Difference Between Solenoid Valve and Motorized Valve
1. How it works
An electromechanical solenoid valve is controlled by an electrical current.
Motorized valves are operated by an electric signal from the motor, which opens, closes, or stops the valve.
2. Types of valve
2.1 Solenoid Valve
An inlet and outlet are connected to the pipeline by a two-way solenoid valve. There are two types of switching functions: Normally Open (when power is on, the solenoid valve is closed, cutting off the fluid), Normally Closed (when power is off, the solenoid valve is open, allowing the fluid to pass).
A three-way solenoid valve has three ports and two holes connected to the pipeline. Controls can be categorized as Normally Closed, Normally Open, or General Type.
Double-acting cylinders are generally operated by four-way solenoid valves. One pressure port, two cylinder ports, and one or two exhaust (oil) ports connect the pipelines.
2.2 Motorized Valve
Motorized quarter-turn valves are designed to automate the precise operation of valves that open and close by rotating 90° (a quarter turn), such as ball valves, plug valves, choke valves, dump valves, and butterfly valves.
Multi-Turn Motorized Valve: Multi-Turn actuators are specially designed for multi-turn valve applications, such as globe valves, gate valves, etc.
A linear motorized valve, such as a control valve or a diaphragm valve, is operated by a linear actuator.
3. Driving Mode
The solenoid valve is operated by electromagnets that move a plunger attached to the valve.
Powered by an electric actuator, motorized valves take longer to open or close than solenoid valves. Flow can be controlled by a current signal (4x20mA) or voltage signal (0x10V).
4. Working Characteristic
Valve solenoids could be damaged by voltage impact, generally suitable for pipelines with diameters below DN50. It has a short switching time, and it is equipped with a high-frequency solenoid valve that is especially suitable for pipelines with high operating frequencies or short switching times.
Driven by the solenoid coil, low driving force, so it is easily damaged by voltage impacts, generally suitable for pipe sizes less than DN50. There is a special high-frequency solenoid valve, which is particularly suitable for pipelines with high operating frequencies or short switching times.
An electric actuator controls the motorized valve, which can withstand voltage impact and have a large driving force. The motorized valve adjusts the flow of the pipeline and is especially suitable for large-diameter pipelines or places where the flow of pipelines needs to be regulated.
In one second, the solenoid valve can be turned on or off. Generally used for small flows and low pressures. You can control the opening of a motorized valve, it can be opened, closed, half-opened, or half-closed. Unlike a solenoid valve, it is capable of controlling media flow in pipelines.
There is a special function of the solenoid valve that allows it to be reset after a power cut. There is, however, a need to add a reset device to the motorized valve.
5. Leakage Problem
A solenoid valve's action principle is a straight stroke, for its diaphragm or pilot. Impurities in the medium can easily cause leakage.
Motorized valves work on the angle stroke principle. The seal is double-sided and does not leak easily.
6. Installation Position
A solenoid valve is operated by a straight stroke, and it seals by gravity and the force of an electromagnet. Solenoid valves can only be installed horizontally, any other installation may result in leaks. The motorized valve does not require installation.
7. Lifespan
When the solenoid valve opens and closes, it depends on the coil electrifying. When the solenoid valve is in a working position, it needs to be electrified all the time (for example, the normally closed solenoid valve must be opened for a long time). If the coil is electrified for a long time, it overheats, which leads to it burning off.
A motorized valve actuator switches action in place, then the power is supplied by an internal microswitch. Powered up only while it's in action, it has a working position to maintain its functionality. Stable performance and longer service life than solenoid valves.
8. IP Rating
A solenoid valve has a simple structure, low protection level, and is easily affected by external dust and air as well as temperature changes.
A motorized valve actuator should be protected by a shell, with a protection level of IP65 / IP67. Provides dust and moisture protection for the actuator.
9. Function
An electric actuator is equipped with a manual operation device, which allows the control valve to be operated manually without the need for a backup bypass. For backup, the pipeline must install a bypass manual valve since the general solenoid valve does not have a manual operation function.
10. Suitable Medium
Acid, lye, water, gas, oil, steam, and other media can be used with solenoid valves. Impurities must not be present in the medium. In this case, we need to install the filter before the solenoid valve. Ensure the solenoid valve operates normally has a low leakage rate, and is of high security.
The motorized valve is not only suitable for controlling the general fluid medium but is also suitable for controlling pulp, sewage, fiber, and small solid particles.
